Infrared Thermography
Infrared Thermography (IR) has found many areas of use in the last 15 years. The old method of using a spot radiometer to measure temperature prevented measuring electrical distribution systems.
The time in which it takes to measure a bucket in an MCC is typically less than it takes to “open” the bucket. This is especially true now that we have safety gear that is a bit cumbersome, yet essential for keeping us safe while performing these inspections.

PdM Specialists uses IR for performing electrical distribution testing (busses, breakers, fuses, splices, etc.) as well as for mechanical testing of bearings, motor windings, etc., and structural testing (kilns, insulation, building roofs, etc.)
The reasons for testing can vary: Safety, Energy Loss and Equipment Reliability
